- More than 50% of surface area in most downtowns is dedicated to roads and parking lots.
- The area outside of the home that parents feel comfortable letting their children play in unsupervised has shrunk by 90% since the 1970s, according to the influential book Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv.
- People have fewer friends and acquaintances when they live near high traffic corridors. (From a study conducted by Transportation Alternatives.)
- People in very high traffic areas have an average of just 0.9 friends–meaning some people have no friends at all!
